abstract The present invention includes compositions and methods for detecting Bacillus anthracis using oligonucleotide probes specific for the genetic material contained in the pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids in nucleic acid hybridization reactions. The method aspect distinguishes anthrax from other bacterial species present in the sample or provides an indication that the assay was performed properly even when no Bacillus sequence was detected. It is also possible to include additional probes specific for other gene sequences.
