titleOfInvention | Correction method for magnetic resonance imaging |
abstract | Spatial encoding of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques is accomplished by sampling the signal as a function of time for magnetic field gradients, eg, X, Y, and Z gradients. It has been previously assumed that gradient magnets produce a linear gradient, and normal video reconstruction techniques rely on this assumption. However, to achieve high speed performance, gradient magnets may sacrifice linearity with respect to speed. This non-linearity results in distorted images, which are sufficient to give up the usefulness of MRI images for stereotactic or long-term studies. This is because accurate quantitative information is required. Disclosed are methods of correcting distortions from gradient magnetic field non-linearities, as well as distortions resulting from transitions, rotations, and / or winding / design errors in a magnetic field generating device. The method employs a spherical harmonic function of the gradient magnetic field and a fast Fourier transform to show a sufficiently corrected image without imposing an excessive burden on the computer. |
