abstract The present invention relates to a material designed to enhance toughness at high temperatures. The material includes a plurality of structural elements (100). The structural element (100) is composed of a series of increasing structural element size classes. The series of size classes has a basic unit size class (102) and at least one modular size class (104), one element of the modular size class (104) being the next smaller size class in the series of size classes. Contains multiple elements. The structural elements of the basic unit size class (102) include at least one bulk phase (103) that are bonded together at the interface (112). It is energetically favorable that the mechanical damage (212) that begins in the modular size class structural element (104) propagates in a distributed manner among the plurality of structural elements contained within the modular size class structural element (104).
