abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polyvinyl alcohol having a high isotacticity and a good quality and good physical properties from a generally used vinyl ester monomer such as vinyl acetate under milder conditions. SOLUTION: Isotacticity characterized by radical polymerization of vinyl ester monomers such as vinyl acetate in the presence of a Lewis acid such as magnesium chloride at 30 ° C. or less is at least 50% in meso diads. A method for producing a certain vinyl ester polymer, and a method for producing polyvinyl alcohol, wherein the vinyl ester polymer obtained by the production method is saponified and has an isotacticity of 50% or more by meso diads.
