A container and packaging for articles requiring a controlled environment. The present invention includes a process and resulting structure for producing a modified polymer having interconnected channels. The interconnect channel acts as a controlled passage through the polymer. The hydrophilic agent is blended into the polymer so that it is distributed within the polymer. In one embodiment, the absorbent and releasable material is blended with the polymer such that the resorbable and releasable material is distributed within the product. The product solidifies and the hydrophilic agent forms a passage in the product through which it can communicate with the absorbent and releasable material incorporated into the product. The solidified product can be used to form desired molded articles such as plug-type inserts and liners for closed containers, or it can be formed into films, sheets, beads or pellets.
