abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a mechanism for suppressing and treating epidermal keratinization by a completely new approach different from the prior art by elucidating the mechanism of keratinization of the epidermis. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] The present invention uses as an index the activity of a candidate substance that suppresses cysteine protease inhibitory activity possessed by squamous cell carcinoma associated antigen-1 (hereinafter referred to as "SCCA-1"). A method for screening a substance that suppresses epidermal keratinization, a substance that suppresses epidermal keratinization screened by such a method, and further suppresses caspase-14 inhibitory activity of SCCA-1 in epidermal cells Thus, a method for normalizing keratinization of epidermal cells and suppressing keratinization of epidermal failure is provided.
