abstract The present invention provides a polyvinyl alcohol film used as a raw film for producing a polarizing film excellent in light transmittance and polarization performance, and a production method thereof. A polyvinyl alcohol film comprising a polyalkylene oxide group-containing compound in an amount of 100 to 500 ppm, and a polarizing film comprising the film. The film is produced by a step of adding at least one nonionic surfactant to a polyvinyl alcohol resin so as to satisfy the following formula (1). 0.5 ≦ Σ {(surfactant HLB) × (addition amount of nonionic surfactant to polyvinyl alcohol resin (wt%))} ≦ 2 (1) (In the formula, HLB means the hydrophilic / lipophilic balance, and Σ means the total when two or more nonionic surfactants are added.)
