In a method for the direct synthesis of methylchlorosilane by Müller-Rochaut, a method is presented which shows an improvement with respect to the production of dimethyldichlorosilane. Methylchlorosilane is directly synthesized by reacting chloromethane with a catalyst material containing a silicon and copper catalyst and having a total ratio of sodium and potassium of 10 to 400 ppm.
