The use of an oxygen-containing gas as a “clean” oxidant in combination with an environmentally friendly and easy-to-handle catalyst system provides high selectivity, high reaction rate and high yield under mild conditions. Process for the catalytic oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones. The alcohol comprises a primary alcohol or a second alcohol in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising (i) a stable nitroxyl free radical derivative, (ii) a nitrate source, (iii) a bromide source, and (iii) a carboxylic acid. It can be oxidized by a method of reacting an alcohol with an oxygen-containing gas, thereby obtaining an aldehyde or a ketone. [Selection figure] None |
