To elucidate the function of a gene involved in cholesterol metabolism, and to obtain a substance that promotes the metabolism of cholesterol using this gene. The present inventors have found that βKlotho protein inhibits the expression of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase gene, and that cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase promotes the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol. A substance that inhibits the expression of βKlotho gene and a substance that promotes the expression of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase gene promote the metabolism of cholesterol, respectively, and are useful for the prevention or treatment of arteriosclerosis, obesity, or gallstone formation. In addition, antibodies against βKlotho protein and cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase gene can be used for promoting cholesterol metabolism. [Selection figure] None |
