abstract A flow field structure and a flow path structure are provided that are optimized to help improve uniform performance and efficiency of a fuel cell system. In a flow field 38 forming one wall of a flow path 36 in a flow field plate of a solid oxide fuel cell, the flow field has a patterned array of flow barriers 52, 64, 66 of different shapes. A flat substrate 40 is included, and the flow barrier protrudes from the substrate into the flow path. The cross-sectional area of the flow field flow path is reduced in the direction of flow, and the different shaped flow barriers include a round flow barrier and an elliptical flow barrier 52, 64, 66.
