PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon fiber strand capable of easily removing an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a surfactant that acts as an adhesion inhibitor. SOLUTION: A method for producing a carbon fiber strand to which a modified polyolefin resin is applied, wherein a water-based emulsion or suspension containing a modified polyolefin resin or an organic solvent solution is applied to an unsized carbon fiber strand, and then the yarn temperature is 120. A method for producing a carbon fiber strand for reinforcing a thermoplastic resin, wherein the modified polyolefin resin is imparted to the surface of the carbon fiber in an amount of 0.1 to 5% by mass by heat treatment at ˜250 ° C. for 30 seconds or more. The modified polyolefin resin preferably contains 0.1 to 20% by mass of an unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer unit. A carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin obtained by blending 5 to 70% by mass of the carbon fiber strand produced according to the present invention with a thermoplastic resin is excellent in mechanical properties such as interlaminar shear strength.
