A salicylic acid capable of producing a salicylic acid ester in a high yield without causing a problem in handling such as causing precipitation in a distillation residue after reaction and enabling reuse of a catalyst used. To provide a novel method for producing an ester. A salicylic acid for a fragrance is transesterified with an alcohol having one or more hydrogen atoms in at least one carbon atom adjacent to a carbon atom having a hydroxyl group in the presence of a tin-based catalyst.
