abstract A method for producing sodium and boron from sodium metaborate by reacting sodium metaborate with at least one reducing agent. The invention further includes (a) reacting sodium metaborate with at least one reducing agent to form a product mixture comprising sodium and boron; and (b) reacting sodium and boron with hydrogen. And a method for producing sodium borohydride by a process comprising forming sodium borohydride. In one embodiment of the present invention, sodium tetraborate is reduced to sodium and boron by at least one of hydrocarbon, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, transition metal, metal hydride, Al, Ga, Si or P.
