PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent capable of forming a coating film having high adhesion to a substrate and having high gas barrier properties and water resistance without interposing an anchor layer. The coating agent comprises 100 parts by weight of a vinyl alcohol polymer having a carbonyl group, 1 to 20 parts by weight of a crosslinking agent having a plurality of hydrazino groups (polyhydric carboxylic acid polyhydrazide compound), an inorganic layered compound ( (Montmorillonite, etc.) 5 to 50 parts by weight and, if necessary, a solvent (particularly an aqueous solvent). This coating agent is useful for producing a laminated film by forming a barrier layer on at least one surface of a base film (such as a petroleum resin-containing propylene-based resin film) without using an anchor coat layer.
