PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper softener capable of flexibly bending and obtaining a paper excellent in water absorption, and to provide a paper softener containing a quaternary ammonium salt (a) and an amide compound (b). An amide compound or a salt thereof obtained by reacting a carboxylic acid having 10 to 24 carbon atoms with a specific polyalkylene polyamine or alkyl polyamine, wherein the amide compound (b) is a quaternary ammonium salt.
