abstract |
A method for forming an antimicrobially treated fabric is described. The method includes forming a solution from a liquid and an antimicrobial agent such as 3- (trimethoxysilyl) propyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride. In one embodiment, the cellulosic fiber material is combined with the solution when the suspension is formed in a pulp former so that the antimicrobial agent becomes adherent to the cellulosic fiber material. The web is formed from an antimicrobial treated cellulosic fiber material such that substantially all of the cellulosic fiber material present in the web is derived from the antimicrobial treated cellulosic fiber material. In one embodiment, the web of antimicrobial treated fiber material is further hydroentangled with the nonwoven substrate. In some embodiments, the antimicrobial agent forms a covalent bond with the cellulosic fiber material when dried. |
