titleOfInvention Drug container insertion mechanism and method
abstract The present invention relates generally to intravenous (IV) infusion of a drug into a patient, and more particularly to aspects of an IV infusion system including an infusate cassette and an infusate container. The invention consists of a powerful vial spike that can be non-metallic, means for covering the spike with a sheath when not in use, a free flow prevention device, an air entrainment lockout mechanism, a quality assurance tag, made of soft material A drug infusion cassette is provided that incorporates a stopper and other advantageous mechanisms such as means for securing the tube to the cassette with a minimum of individual parts. The drug cassette can be used with an automatic puncture mechanism that includes an electric vial holder that holds the vial. If the medication cassette is not fully engaged with the mating surface of a pumping unit or a device such as a sedative and analgesic delivery system, the spike remains covered with the sheath.
