One aspect of the present invention relates to ionic liquids containing pendant Bronsted acid groups, such as sulfonic acid groups. Another aspect of the present invention relates to catalyzing a Bronsted acid catalyzed chemical reaction with an ionic liquid containing pendant Bronsted acidic groups. A third aspect of the present invention relates to ionic liquids containing pendant nucleophilic groups such as amines. Yet another aspect of the invention relates to catalyzing nucleophile related chemical reactions using ionic liquids containing pendant nucleophilic groups. A fifth aspect of the present invention relates to the removal of gaseous impurities such as carbon dioxide from gases such as sour natural gas using ionic liquids containing pendant nucleophilic groups. |
