titleOfInvention A method for removing mercury from flue gases by oxidation.
abstract In a method for removing metals such as mercury from flue gas produced by a combustor, when the flue gas is at a temperature of 900-1350 ° F., sufficient to oxidize the metal in the flue gas. These substances are injected into the flue gas so that quantities of ammonia and possibly carbon monoxide are present in the flue gas. The oxidized metal is then attracted to particulate matter present in the flue gas. This particulate matter combined with the oxidized metal is removed from the flue gas by a particulate removal device such as an electrostatic precipitator or baghouse. After the ammonia is injected, the flue gas can be quickly cooled to a temperature below 500 ° F., and decomposition of the oxidized metal in the flue gas can be minimized.
