titleOfInvention Spinal needle system
abstract A spinal needle system that stabilizes the dura mater by signaling the invasion of the tip into the epidural space. The system comprises a cannula (17) and at least one barb (50). The cannula has an annular surface surrounding the end port at the distal tip (52), the at least one barb protruding at an angle from the annular surface of the cannula for grasping and controlling tissue. . Each barb (50) having a sharp end is formed, and the barb is configured to grasp the tissue as the tubular member rotates about its longitudinal axis. One implementation of this system comprises a plurality of unidirectional barbs (50) spaced around the annular surface of the cannula (17). The system includes an indicator mechanism that provides a visual and tactile indication when the cannula encounters and penetrates the tissue.
