Two-component polyurethane adhesive and method for structural finger joints |
abstract |
One embodiment of the present invention is an adhesive composition formed from two packs. One pack includes an isocyanate functional prepolymer formed by reacting a polyisocyanate with an alcohol (eg, a polyol). The isocyanate equivalent from the polyisocyanate exceeds the hydroxyl equivalent from the alcohol. The second pack is an aqueous polymer emulsion. These two packs together form a new adhesive composition. Another aspect of the present invention is a method of joining two surfaces of a wood product together by applying an adhesive thereto. The first step of this method is to spray water on the wood product surfaces to be joined. The adhesive composition is then applied to the sprayed wood product surface. Alternatively, the spray can be replaced with an aqueous emulsion that is part of the adhesive composition. Finally, the adhesive composition is cured. |
