Polymers containing functionalized carbon nanotubes |
abstract |
A polymer composite composed of a functionalized carbon nanotube and a polymerized mixture of monomers that chemically react with the functionalized nanotube. Carbon nanotubes are functionalized by reacting with oxidation or other chemical media through chemical reaction or physisorption. The reacted surface carbon of the nanotubes is further functionalized with chemical moieties that react with the surface carbon and selected monomers. The functionalized nanotubes are first dispersed in a suitable medium such as water, alcohol, or liquefied monomer, and then the mixture is polymerized. Polymerization results in an increase in the weight of the polymer chain bound to the surface carbon of the nanotubes. The composite can consist of polymer chains embedded in the composite rather than attached to the nanotubes. The resulting composites produce superior chemical, physical, and electrical properties compared to polymer composites that are simply physically mixed and not bonded to the surface carbon of the nanotubes. |
