abstract A container assembly (10) and method for storing, processing, transporting and stabilizing biological samples is removably received in a container (12), a closure member (14), and the container (12). A sample holder (16). The sample holder (16) may be a platform-like device sized to be supported by a ledge (36) formed on the side wall (18) of the container (12). The sample holder (16) includes a central cavity (78) that receives the sample (108) and immerses the sample (108) in a stabilizer in the container (12). The closure member (14) includes a body member (52) that closes the top end of the central cavity (78) of the sample holder (16) and restricts movement of the sample holder (16) within the container (12). In another embodiment, the sample holder (16) has a closure cap (14) that closes the open top end of the cavity (78). The container (12) contains an amount of liquid reagent (106) sufficient to process the biological sample (108).
