titleOfInvention | Production, detection and use of transformed cells |
abstract | Bioactive compounds or families of compounds are biosynthesized by cells using a number of enzyme activities. We provide a host cell that substantially lacks biological activity but has at least one first enzymatic activity (or nucleic acid encoding the corresponding enzyme). The cell is transformed with a nucleic acid that can be expressed to provide at least one second enzymatic activity that enables the cell to produce a bioactive compound. A family of cells can be transformed with a variety of different nucleic acids, resulting in a cell library containing cells that produce different biologically active products and cells that do not produce biologically active products. Transformed cells can be screened for biological activity. Active cells can be isolated and cultured, and bioactive compounds can be isolated. |
