The present invention relates to a layered drug delivery device for administration of drugs or other active compounds to mucosal surfaces. This device can also be used on its own without the uptake of therapeutic agents. The device of the present invention consists of a water soluble adhesive layer, a non-adhesive bioerodible backing layer, and optionally one or more medicaments in either or both layers. Upon application, the device adheres onto the mucosal surface and provides protection against the treatment site and localized drug delivery. The “residence time”, which is the length of time that the device remains on the mucosal surface before erosion is complete, can be easily adjusted by modifying the backing layer. |
