abstract | To provide an image forming apparatus capable of uniform charging without generating ripple even when the process speed is increased. SOLUTION: A contact discharge type charger 21, an exposure unit 3, black toner and color toner developing units 4a to 4d, a primary transfer unit 51, a photoconductor cleaner 6, and a charge eliminating device around the photoconductor 1 in order from the upstream side. In the image forming apparatus in which the lamps 7 are sequentially attached and a black and white or color toner image is formed by a known electrophotographic process, for example, an injection-type potential smoothing unit 22 is provided on the downstream side of the charger 21. Then, an organic compound having a reduction potential in the range of −0.8 to 0 eV with respect to the saturated calomel electrode, for example, is added to the uppermost layer of the photoreceptor 1 to provide a potential smoothing layer.
