A thiocarboxylic acid S-acid ester is produced by reacting an episulfide compound having one or more thiirane rings in one molecule such as the general formula (1) with a thiocarboxylic acid S-acid in the presence of a base, A method comprising a three-step process in which this is hydrolyzed in the presence of a base and converted to vicinal diol with an acid.
