PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane-catalyst layer assembly capable of realizing a polymer electrolyte fuel cell having excellent durability that not only sufficiently prevents deterioration of initial characteristics but also exhibits sufficient battery performance over a long period of time. . At least in the cathode catalyst layer, the ratio of the mass W P of the polymer electrolyte to the mass W Cat-C of the catalyst-supporting carbon (W P / W Cat-C ) is set to a position closest to the polymer electrolyte membrane. The ratio is reduced from the innermost layer disposed to the outermost layer disposed farthest from the polymer electrolyte membrane, and the ratio (W P / W Cat-C ) in the innermost layer is set to 0.8 to 3.0.
