Disclosed is a dispersion of fine silica that has stable viscosity and good handleability even when the silica concentration is high, and an inkjet recording material that has gloss and image quality comparable to that of photographic printing paper and is free from coating failures. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] (1) In a silica dispersion prepared by pulverizing a wet process silica in water so that the secondary particle size is less than 1 μm, the silica dispersion reacts with sulfate ions to be insoluble in water. Alternatively, a silica dispersion characterized by containing a substance that forms a poorly water-soluble salt. 2) An ink jet recording material obtained by coating a support with a coating liquid for an ink receiving layer containing at least the above silica dispersion and a binder.
