A method and apparatus for producing 4-hydroxybutyl (meth) acrylate with high yield are provided. (A) 1,4-butanediol and (meth) acrylic acid are reacted in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a catalyst, and (B) water is added to form an aqueous layer and a hydrocarbon solvent layer. (C) Toluene is added to the aqueous layer to separate the toluene layer and the aqueous layer, and (D) 4-hydroxybutyl (meth) acrylate is recovered by distilling off the toluene from the toluene layer.
