【Task】 Provided are an active material having a very high charge / discharge capacity, a method for producing the active material, a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery and a lithium primary battery that can be reduced in size and weight. [Solution] The active material is an active material having at least ferrous diphosphide, and the ferrous diphosphide has a non-crystalline portion. The ferrous diphosphide preferably has a discharge capacity greater than 1365 mAh / g. The production method of the active material is a production method in which a mixture of ferrous phosphide obtained by reducing a phosphorus compound with hydrogen and phosphorus is fired to obtain ferrous diphosphide.
