abstract The present invention provides a method capable of highly controlling the degree of polymerization in the production of polybenzazole from an AB-PBZ monomer having a molar ratio of an electron-deficient carbon group to an o-amino basic moiety in the monomer of 1: 1. This is the issue. (1) A poly containing 5 to 75 repeating units by reacting 0.005 to 0.10 mol of AA-PBZ monomer or BB-PBZ monomer per mol of AB-PBZ monomer in dehydrated solvent acid. Intrinsic viscosity is obtained through a step of forming a reaction mixture containing a benzoazole oligomer, and a step (2) of contacting and reacting the reaction mixture with an additional BB-PBZ monomer or AA-PBZ monomer to form a polybenzoazole polymer. A process for producing 2-40 dL / g AB / AA / BB-polybenzoazole polymer.
