abstract A method of synthesizing carbon nanotubes and a structure formed of carbon nanotubes are provided. The method includes: forming carbon nanotubes on a plurality of synthesis sites supported by a first substrate; interrupting nanotube synthesis; and a free end of each carbon nanotube on a second substrate. And a step of removing the first substrate. Each carbon nanotube is capped by one of the synthesis sites, where the growth reactants are easily accessible. During the resumed nanotube synthesis, access to this synthesis site remains unhindered as each carbon nanotube extends. [Selection] Figure 6
