abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress distortion, cracks and bubbles generated on an inner surface of a clad when a core is generated in the clad. A plastic optical fiber is manufactured by generating a core 30 in a clad 12. The core 30 is produced by injecting a core monomer into the clad 12 together with a dopant and polymerizing it. The relationship between the temperature TA (° C.) of the cladding 30 at the time of core monomer injection and the thermal deformation temperature Tt (° C.) of the polymer forming the cladding 12 is Tt−60 ≦ TA ≦ Tt or 40 ≦ TA ≦ Tt. The clad 30 is heated. Further, the clad 12 is subjected to a decompression process during the heating. Polymerization of the core monomer is performed in the polymerization apparatus 40 under pressure and heating in a nitrogen atmosphere. The preform thus obtained is free from distortion, cracks and bubbles on the inner surface of the clad, and the optical fiber obtained from this preform has good optical properties.
