Disclosed is a valve lifter for an internal combustion engine that can reduce friction between mating members, improve the performance and durability reliability of the internal combustion engine, and improve fuel efficiency of the internal combustion engine. A hard carbon coating 1a such as a DLC thin film is formed on the crown and side surfaces of a valve lifter by, for example, a PVD method, and the hydrogen content thereof is set to 1 atomic% or less.
