The present invention provides a method for forming a liquid crystal alignment film by a photo-alignment method that does not require tilting a substrate in a pre-tilt angle expression method in a photo-alignment method and that exhibits a pre-tilt angle by collective plane exposure. A method of forming a liquid crystal alignment film having two or more alignment directions by a photo-alignment method performed by partially protecting a polymer film surface. At that time, the surface of the polymer film and the light beam are relatively moved at a substantially constant speed, and the polymer film surface is exposed while having a distribution in irradiation intensity, thereby imparting liquid crystal alignment ability to the polymer film surface.
