abstract | An image forming apparatus that suppresses deterioration of image quality due to transfer dust or transfer failure that occurs when toner is transferred from an electrophotographic photosensitive member to an intermediate transfer member, and maintains the deterioration suppression state of the transferred image. . A toner image on an image carrier is primarily transferred to an intermediate transfer member, and the toner image on the intermediate transfer member is secondarily transferred to a transfer material. In such an image forming apparatus, toner is imaged between the surface of the image carrier and the surface of the intermediate transfer member on the upstream side in the rotation direction of the image carrier with the contact portion between the image carrier and the intermediate transfer member interposed therebetween. An electric field in the direction of moving toward the carrier is formed, and an electric field in the direction of moving toner toward the intermediate transfer member is formed between the surface of the image carrier and the surface of the intermediate transfer member on the downstream side. On the other hand, the image bearing member is composed of an electrophotographic photosensitive member in which a photosensitive layer 82 and a surface protective layer 83 are sequentially laminated on a conductive substrate 81, and the surface protective layer of the electrophotographic photosensitive member includes a radiation crosslinking agent.
