The present invention relates to a method for forming an ionomer by treatment of a copolymer having a side chain of fluoroalkoxysulfonyl fluoride and having a substantially fluorinated but not perfluorinated polyethylene backbone with ammonium carbonate. Ionomers derived therefrom by ion exchange are useful in electrochemical applications such as batteries, fuel cells, electrolytic cells, ion exchange membranes, sensors, electrochemical capacitors, and modified electrodes. |
