The present invention relates to novel identification of inhibitors of phosphodiesterase type 4 ("PDE4") as agents capable of reversing the inhibition of nerve regeneration in the central and peripheral nervous systems of mammals. The present invention provides compositions and methods that use agents that can reverse the inhibitory effects of nerve regeneration by modulating PDE4 expression. Provided is a composition comprising at least one PED4 inhibitor in an amount effective to inhibit PDE4 activity in neurons when administered to an animal. A method for regulating the growth or regeneration of nerves in the nervous system, a method for treating damage or injury to nerve tissue or neurons, and a method for treating degeneration of nerves associated with a disorder or disease. A method comprising administering to a animal a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of an agent that inhibits phosphodiesterase IV activity in neurons. |
