Provided is a negative electrode for use in an electrochemical cell, wherein the negative electrode active layer has a multilayer structure including a first layer including lithium metal and a conductive layer of a single ion, and a surface of the first layer including lithium. Above has a polymer layer in contact with said first layer comprising lithium metal or with an intermediate protective layer such as a temporary protective metal layer. Another aspect of the present invention provides a negative electrode active layer formed by in situ deposition of lithium vapor and a reactive gas. The negative electrode of the present invention is particularly useful for an electrochemical cell containing a positive electrode active material containing sulfur, such as elemental sulfur. |
