titleOfInvention | New crystalline forms of oxcarbazepine and methods for their preparation |
abstract | The present invention provides new crystalline forms of oxcarbazepine, and more particularly, forms B, C, D, and E of oxcarbazepine. The invention further provides methods of preparing these forms. Form B is prepared by evaporation of the solvent from a solution of oxcarbazepine in toluene and dichloromethane. Form B can also be obtained by immediately cooling a solution of oxcarbazepine in toluene. Cooling the same solution at a slower rate, but still much faster, gives oxcarbazepine form C. By cooling the same solution at a slower rate, another form, oxcarbazepine in Form D, is obtained. The solvate of chloroform, oxcarbazepine in Form E, is obtained by precipitating a solution of oxcarbazepine and chloroform. The present invention also provides a method of converting a newly discovered crystalline form of oxcarbazepine to other crystalline forms, including the prior art Form A. These conversions can occur by storage at ambient temperature, by heating one particular form, or by treatment with a protic solvent. |
