abstract | The present invention relates to a compound of the general formula A x + y [(porphine-Tm) B y -x ] wherein A is a specific alkali metal and B is a sulfonic acid group, a carboxylic acid group or a phosphonic acid for charge balancing. And Tm is a transition metal.) And a polycondensation catalyst which is a salt of macrocyclic polypyrrole useful as a polycarbonate melt polymerization catalyst. We have found that this new type of catalyst provides excellent polymerization rates for the production of bisphenol A polycarbonate by melt polymerization of diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A. Moreover, the catalysts of the present invention have also been found to be highly selective in substantially reducing the level of branching side reactions (i.e., fleece product formation) normally associated with molten polycarbonate processes. |
