abstract Compositions and methods for increasing the fluorescence intensity of a molecule are provided. In particular, compositions and methods are described for increasing the endogenous fluorescence of biomolecules and low quantum yield fluorophores. The intrinsic fluorescence of a biomolecule is increased by placing the metal particles and the biomolecule far enough apart to increase the rate of radiation decay of the biomolecule. A method for the identification of a nucleic acid is also provided. Compositions and methods for increasing the emission of any fluorophore, such as an exogenous probe used for labeled biomolecules, can also be used.
