abstract | The present invention relates to a method that is particularly suitable for large-scale production of tetrapyrrole compounds such as mesoformyl porphyrins, mesoacrylate porphyrins, purpurins and benzochlorins. In particular, tin ethyl etiopurpurine (SnET2), sometimes referred to as rostaporphine, and intermediates required for its production without chromatography are disclosed. In addition, many of the disclosed chemistry is applicable to large-scale production of benzochlorins. Purpurins, benzochlorins and some of the intermediates in their synthesis are useful as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy or as porphyrin building blocks in the synthesis of other porphyrin substances. |
