abstract | The present invention relates to a method for producing a polycarbonate using a polycondensation catalyst which is a salt of a certain phenanthroline compound. The present inventors have found that this new type of catalyst provides an excellent polymerization rate in the production of bisphenol A polycarbonate by melt polymerization of diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A. Further, the catalysts of the present invention have also been found to be highly selective in substantially reducing the level of branching side reactions (ie, fleece product formation) normally associated with the molten polycarbonate process. |
