abstract |
Apparatus and method for improving solid state laser performance. The solid-state laser device preferably uses a laser gain medium in the form of a disc in which the optical excitation radiation is injected at the peripheral edge of the disc. In this preferred embodiment, the laser gain medium is provided with an optical coating for operation in an active mirror configuration. Further, the laser gain medium is attached to the hard cooled substrate by pressure, so that a predetermined shape can be maintained even when a large heat load occurs. The cooling medium may be provided to a heat exchanger in the substrate and / or may flow through a passage on the surface of the substrate to directly cool the laser gain medium. An optically pumped illumination source is operated around the circumference of the gain medium to concentrate the optically pumped illumination. By properly choosing the doping of the laser gain medium, the divergence of the pump source and the geometry, a uniform laser gain can be obtained over a large part of the gain medium. |
