Radiation-crosslinked, biodegradable synthetic hydrogels, and various uses thereof, including implanting the hydrogels in the body of a human patient or animal. The radiation-crosslinked, biodegradable synthetic hydrogels according to the present invention can be prepared by irradiating monomers (such as acrylic and methacrylic monomers such as unsaturated hydrocarbons) or polymers, some of which are bioactive. It includes degradable or biodegradable units or subunits. Medical applications of radiation crosslinked, biodegradable synthetic hydrogels include the use of hydrogels for hemostasis, tissue augmentation, tissue engineering, embolization, closure of blood vessel hiatuses or wounds, and the like. |
