abstract The present invention relates to the use of an active ingredient selected from the group consisting of agonists of the adenosine receptor system for inhibiting the replication of a virus in a cell. In particular, the present invention provides compositions and methods for inhibiting the replication of a virus in a cell, the method comprising providing the cell with an effective amount of the active ingredient. According to one aspect, the adenosine agonist is an A3 receptor agonist (A3RAg). The invention is particularly useful, but not limited to, inhibiting the replication of HIV in human cells.
