titleOfInvention Laser penetration depth control device
abstract The invention features systems and means for controlling the depth of light penetration of laser energy, for example, when firing the laser energy to target tissue of a patient. The system and means control the light penetration depth (OPD) by controlling the angle of incidence of the laser energy launched into the target area of the patient. Aspects of the invention include an optical coupler that allows a user to change the angle of incidence and thus selectably control the OPD of the incident laser energy. Fabricating the optical coupler to have a refractive index greater than that of the target tissue increases the range of selectable OPDs. The laser energy fired at the desired depth causes a change in the target tissue, for example, by heating, ablation and / or photochemical reactions.
